Bayern Munich finish a tough week on a disappointing note after they were held for a goalless draw by Bayer Leverkusen.

The Bavarians were unable to hold on to their chances which ultimately cost them two points. Bayern Munich still remain in strong position in Bundesliga, but their lead at the top was cut to eight points after Saturday’s draw against Leverkusen.

Carlo Ancelotti made numerous changes in the starting eleven keeping the important second leg tie against Real Madrid on Tuesday. He kept the spine of the team intact but still they couldn’t break Leverkusen’s resolve despite having a man advantage in second half.

The visitors started the game in the right way as they surged forward to create chances straighaway. There were nice touches from Thiago Alcantara in the box. The Spaniad justcouldn’t play the final ball correctly to give his team the early lead.

Bayern were dominating possession as expected but were very vulnerable on counter.Kevin Volland had a a brilliant chance at 8th minute but fouled Rafinha in the buildup to his shot. Bayern Munich target Julian Brandt also had a golden opportunity to score at the half and hour mark.  He lost his footing and blew the shot way over the goal.

Just after the chance for Brandt, there came a flurry of chances for Bayern in a space of two minutes. Kingsley coman showed brilliant footwork on the left flank while beating his man and then squaring it for David Alaba. However the Austrian took a lot of time to take his shot and it was cleared off the line. The rebound fell to Javi Martinez whose shot was blocked and the Arturo Vidal headed the ball towards the goal. His header was then cleared off the line by Omer Toprak.

The Bavarians continue to grow into the game from this moment.  Coman had a brilliant chance to break the deadlock 37th minute when Thomas Muller squared the ball only for him to fail to bury the shot from close range. Bayern had a couple of chances before half time whistle as they finished the half on top.

Bayern came out roaring in the second half as they were hardly giving Leverkusen a sniff at their goal. Thomas Muller missed two brilliant chances  just before the hour mark which summed up his frustrating season ahead of the goal. Just a couple minutes later, the home side were reduced to ten men as Tin Jedvaj was given marching orders.

After the dimissal of Jedvaj, Leverkusen sat deep which made things difficult for Bayern. They were not able to break them down. Manuel Neuer almost gifted Leverkusen a goal when his throw fell straight in the path of Karim Bellarabi.HThe German failed to capitalise Neuer’s mistake as he hit the shot wide of the target.

Bayern had one final chance to win the game when Muller delivered a brilliant cross for Lahm in final minutes. However the rightback scuffed the shot wide summing up Bayern’s disappointing day. Ancelotti will be hoping that his players have their shooting boots on against Real Madrid as they are in real danger of going out of Champions League.
