In the close matchup, Douglas Costa’s brilliant 71st minute goal was the goal that set Bayern Munich apart from Darmstadt for a 1-0 win.
Bayern Munich has struggled this season to break down strong defenses and teams this year in the Bundesliga. This combined with the absence of Arjen Robben due to injury created an atmosphere where Bayern Munich sometimes lacked in chances and threats. Darmstadt started the game with guns blazing, testing Manuel Neuer in the early minutes of the match. Bayern recovered, but the threat of Darmstadt’s attack lingered.
Bayern had there fair share of chances as well. Notably, Mats Hummels had a chance off a Thiago free kick, which he could have done better on despite claims for a penalty. Regardless of whether a penalty was called, Douglas Costa was able to definitively put Bayern in front with his impressive strike from distance, which can be seen in the highlights below.
As the match progressed, Bayern did an excellent job of controlling the tempo of the match and creating intensity and chances. Before Costa could work his magic, Robert Lewandowski had an excellent chance on frame that somehow did not end up in the back of the net.
After Costa’s goal, Darmstadt valiantly tried to equalize, having their best chances of the match, but they were unable to come up with a goal. This helped Bayern Munich get back atop the Bundesliga table again in time for their upcoming match against second place Leipzig on Wednesday.
