Bayern Munich qualify for the next round of Champions League after a 2-1 win over PSV Eindhove at Philips Stadium on Tuesday.

The visitors came back from a goal down to win the game courtesy of a brace from Robert Lewandowski. Bayern Munich became the second team from their group to qualify for round of 16. Atletico Madrid confirmed their spot after a 2-1 win over FC Rostov on Tuesday.

Carlo Ancelloti made some changes to the team which featured in a 3-1 win over Augsburg on Saturday. Jerome Boateng replaced the injured Javi Martinez in the heart of defence. Joshua Kimmich was in the midfield three in place of Thiago Alcantara. Thomas Muller came back in the front three replacing the Brazilian winger Douglas Costa.

The away side dominated the possession from the start. Ancelloti’s men were playing in the half of PSV as they tried to grab an early lead. The first good opportunity for Bayern came through Lewandowski. Boateng played a delicious looping ball from the back which was headed by Lewandowski on the crossbar. The Polish striker couldn’t hit the target on rebound.

Despite all the dominance, Bayern was the team which conceded the first goal of the game. PSV moved the ball swiftly after winning it in their box. A curled delivery from the right flank was met by Davy Propper forcing Manuel Neuer to make a brilliant save. The save went in vain as Santiago Arias bundled the ball into net from the rebound.

Bayern now started creating numerous chances in order to find the equaliser. Lewandowski struck the woodwork with a header from a corner routine. The breakthrough came at half and hour mark after some tidy work from Philip Lahm on right hand side. The righback squared the ball which struck the hand of Andres Guardado. Lewandowski converted from the spot to equalize for the visitors.

The German Champions started the second half dominantly. They had decent chances to find the second goal, but were not able to convert it. Arturo Vidal got the best chance of the second half as he was in one on one situation with goalkeeper.

Bayern finally got the winner from their star striker. The second half substitute Costa and Alaba linked up well in the build up of the goal. Alaba’s accurate delivery from the flank was finished perfectly by Lewandowski. The visiting side then saw out the game to clinch the three points. Lewandowski came close to complete his hattrick as he struck the framework after some neat skills to beat the goalkeeper in the box.

Ancelloti’s men confirmed a berth in last 16 but still remain three points behind Atletico Madrid in the group. Bayern will be looking to target the first position when they host Atletico in the final matchday of Champions League group stage.
