Bayern Munich grabbed their first win in Bundesliga in three games after a comfortable 2-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach at Allianz Arena.
The German champions had endured two scoring draws in their last Bundesliga games. Bayern Munich remain unbeaten in the league. They have a lead of three points over second placed Hertha Berlin.
Carlo Ancelloti made numerous changes from the team’s 4-1 win over PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday. Javi Martinez and Rafinha replaced Jerome Boateng and Philip Lahm in the back four respectively. Arturo Vidal came back in the midfield for Joshua Kimmich. Ancelloti gave Douglas Costa his first start since returning from injury.
The home side stamped their authority in the game from the start. Bayern dominated the possesion and played the game in Gladbach’s half early on. The best chance of the game fell for the visitors surprisingly. After a swift counterattack the ball was crossed into the path of Fabian Johnson who blazed it wide. Bayern were working on the right flank to initiate their attacks.
The German champions got the reward for their work at 16th minute. Robben did some neat work on the right flank and played a nice ball to Rafinha. The Brazilian delivered a cross in the box, which was finished emphatically by Vidal. Bayern were in total control of the game. Robben and Costa were switching flanks regularly creating problems for the defenders.
Bayern doubled their lead after half and hour. Robben and Alaba linked up well on the left flank.
The Austrian full back then delivered a ferocious cross in the box. The cross was converted by Costa with a sublime finish with his right foot. Ancelloti’s men kept on dominating the midfield and created some decent chances before the half-time.
The home side started the second half as they had done in the first half. Costa was the star man for Bayern Munich as he was creating havoc in the final third with his dribbles and trickery. Bayern were seeing out the game as the vistors were hardly causing the problem. The best chance of the game for Gladbach came midway through the second half when Andre Hann hit the woodwork from close range.
Gladbach tried to be more expansive in the final third, but Bayern defence were able to deal with any danger easily. The substitute Renato Sanches tested Gladbach goalkeeper with a long range effort. In the final minutes of the game Alaba delivered a sublime freekick which could have been Bayern’s third goal.
Ancelloti will be happy with the team’s performance in last two games after questioning their attitude last weekend. The Bavarians will now face Augsburg in the DFB Pokal game on Wednesday
