On Saturday, Bayern Munich suffered their first Bundesliga defeat of the season, losing at home to their Bavarian neighbours, FC Augsburg, by a score of 1-2.

A loss had to come at some point, but most would not have expected it in the Bavarian derby against the team that is 15th in the Bundesliga.

Apart from the wounded pride in front of the home fans, it means that Leverkusen will remain the only team in the history of the Bundesliga to have ever gone an entire season unbeaten at least until the completion of the next season.

It remains to be seen how Bayern will respond to the loss when they face PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday. Let’s take a look at how and where things would have gone wrong for Bayern on matchday 19.

One injury too many

After losing both of his preferred right-backs, Josip Stanisic and Konrad Laimer, due to injury just days into the Ruckrunde, Vincent Kompany now also found himself without the services of his main center-back, Dayot Upamecano, due to a viral infection.

With Raphael Guerreiro nursing a calf strain and Sacha Boey being sidelined from a rare long-term gastrointestinal illness, it meant that the third and fourth string right-backs were also unavailable.

Having seen Tom Bischof, not set the world on fire when being played out of position as a full-back, Kompany decided to start Alphonso Davies at right-back with Hiroki Ito at left-back. Joshua Kimmich started the game amongst the substitutes.

In fairness to the coach, considering that it was Ito who scored for Bayern, after 23 minutes with a fine header, and they preserved that lead until the 75th minute, there appeared to be little reason for concern at the break. However just before the half-time whistle the visitors sounded a warning when midfielder Robin Fellhauer struck the crossbar.
