Bayern Munich president demands stricter FFP rules after Man City escape CL ban.

Bayern Munich has been one of the most efficiently run clubs in Europe. The German club has been proactive in the transfer window, rarely spending obscene amounts of money on an individual. It is a testament to their recruitment policy that the club record transfer fee for a single player stood at €40 million before Lucas Hernandez moved to Bavaria from Atletico Madrid for €67 million.

The efficient approach regarding transfers has helped them to adhere to financial fair play guidelines imposed by UEFA. The club has parted ways with players at the right time to make sure that they can balance the books.

Not many clubs in Europe have been as efficient with their finances compared to Die Roten. Manchester City found themselves in a state of bother when UEFA handed them a two-year Champions League ban in February. However, a hearing at Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) helped the English club to overturn the two-year Champions League ban after UEFA had found them guilty for breaching financial fair play rules.

Many clubs and managers have reacted in contrasting ways regarding the decision from CAS. On the wake up of this decision, Oliver Kahn told Goal that financial fair play rules should be strictly followed in the future. He declined to give a particular comment regarding Man City’s case.

"“I don’t know the situation exactly now in Man City or Paris Saint-Germain or other clubs but I think we should take this Financial Fair Play in the future more seriously, because if we don’t do that, we don’t need it.”“I think there is a lot of work to do and as you see from the competition in Europe, we need a clear structure and serious Financial Fair Play so that we get more balanced competition.”"

Die Roten has been critical about Man City in the past regarding their huge spending in the transfer market. Apart from Kahn, no other club officials have commented about financial fair play most recently. Uli Hoeness, former club president, has previously taken at Man City for spending a crazy amount of money.

Man City has been consistently insisting that they have done nothing wrong, being unfairly handed the two-year ban by UEFA. They ended up getting the decision in their favour, but UEFA may have to reconsider the Financial Fair Play guidelines if there are going to be very fewer ramifications if a rich club exploits it in the future.

Kahn is spot on regarding that correct implementation of FFP is necessary to allow a fair competition amongst top European clubs. If richer clubs continue to find loopholes in these guidelines, then we will have very few success stories such as Ajax reaching in semi-finals in the Champions League last season.

Die Roten and Man City were recently involved in negotiations for star forward Leroy Sane. The German winger eventually got a move to Bavaria after heavy speculation lasting over more than a year. The two clubs could face each other in the semi-finals of the Champions League later this month.
