Bastian Schweinsteiger believes that it is the right time for Thomas Muller to leave Bayern Munich.

Thomas Muller has found a way back in the starting lineup at Bayern Munich since the end of second international break of the season. The German forward has not been at his best in these games, but his performances have made a positive impact on the pitch for Bayern.

This run of games came after reports emerged in Germany that Muller is contemplating a move away from Bayern. The German forward also admitted that he is too ambitious to be an impact player from the bench every week.

Bayern Munich made it clear that Muller remains an important player for the club. Hasan Salihamidzic also insisted that the club will not entertain offers for the forward in the upcoming January transfer window amidst the reports linking him to Manchester United.

Despite starting in the past few games, Muller’s future will be a talking point in Germany for some time. Speaking to SportBild (via DW), Bastian Schweinsteiger insisted that his situation and Muller’s situation are completely different. The former Bayern midfielder believes that the time is right for Muller to experience a new adventure if he continues to get less gametime.

"“His situation is different to mine back then. I was playing every game, then van Gaal contacted me, I wanted to try something new.“Thomas is often on the bench lately, a change of air can be good at the end of a career – that’s how it was with me. Thomas still has great quality.”"

Schweinsteiger also confirmed that Louis Van Gaal was desperate to sign Muller in 2015. Bayern reportedly rejected offers in the region of €100 million for Muller at that time. However, the club’s stance is unlikely to be the same in the next summer window.

Muller still has quality, but he will turn 31 next season, and his productivity in the final third has been on a steady decline in the last three seasons. Moreover, Bayern is also looking to reduce the average age of their squad by signing top young talents. They released few senior players last summer to make way for the new transfers. Muller could be the next senior player to leave if a player such as Kai Havertz arrives at the club next summer.

Apart from Muller, Schweinsteiger spoke about numerous topics related to Bayern. He backed Oliver Kahn to do well in the new role at Bayern. The former goalkeeper is set to join the club administration at the start of 2020.

Schweinsteiger announced retirement from football last month and is set to start a punditry stint on German TV. The midfielder didn’t rule out a return to football in a coaching role. It will be interesting to see if Bayern offers him a role at the club in the future.
